Eastern Panhandle Green Homes Tour
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Self-guided, open-house style tour featuring
seven homes in Jefferson, Berkeley and Morgan counties that illustrate
various different kinds of green building techniques. To participate,
purchase a brochure beforehand for $15 at any one of these locations:
DISH American Bistro, 213 W. Washington Street, Charles Town; Four
Seasons Books, 116 W. German Street, Shepherdstown; Sir Speedy Printing,
1351 Edwin Miller Blvd., Martinsburg; The Nature Niche, 50 Washington
Street, Berkeley Springs. The brochure will include a map and directions
to the different homes, and each brochure will admit one carload

Birding walk
at the National Conservation Training Center
Participants will bird the various habitats on the Center's
538-acre campus outside Shepherdstown, including several wooded
trails, meadows, edge areas and hedgerows. They will make a stop
to observe the bald eagle nest on property and have opportunities
to observe various warblers, vireos, thrushes, scarlet tanagers
and other species of birds. Participants should check in at the
Security Gate inside NCTC and meet at 8 a.m. in the reception area
of the main building at NCTC. Security will tell you where to park.
Because of the security requirements at NCTC, this trip will require
pre-registration at least 5 days beforehand (by May 17). To pre-register,

PVAS program
at Cacapon State Park
7:00 p.m. in
the Morgan Room of the Park Lodge. Nickolas McHenry, U.S. Corps
of Engineers Environmental Engineer, will give a presentation about
"Staying safe in the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area—what the public
needs to know about unexploded World War II munitions there." Free
and open to the public.

Master Naturalist Workshop
Project Wild. 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at Cacapon State Park, Berkeley
Springs. Art Schomo, of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources,
will provide a comprehensive review of the Project WILD conservation
and environmental education program, which is one of the most widely
used such programs for grades K-12. It is based on the premise that
young people and educators have a vital interest in learning about

Master Naturalist Workshop
Ferns. 9:00 a.m.-12 noon at the Eidolon Nature Preserve, Morgan
County. This workshop will cover the natural and cultural history
of ferns and provide hands-on experience in taxonomic identification.
The instructors will be Master Naturalists Sandra Bloom and Cheryl

fundraising reception hosted by Rusty and Cricket Morgan at their
historic Ripon Lodge farm
in southern Jefferson County. 4:00-7:00 p.m. All proceeds
will be used to support PVAS's education programs for local children.
Basic tickets are $45 per person. Those who pay $150 for two people
will be recognized as Donors, those who pay $200 for two will be
recognized as Patrons, and those who pay $250 or more for two will
be recognized as Supporters. All tickets are fully tax deductible.

Field trip to the Smithsonian Institution Naturalist Center in Leesburg,
VA
11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. For adults and families with children over
10. Trip is intended to provide an introduction to the many learning
and research resources available at the center, which was established
over 30 years ago to give the public "hands-on" opportunities to
explore natural history subjects. Registration is recommended but

trip to the Ice Mountain preserve in Hampshire County WV
To
be led by naturalist and PVAS Board member Clark Dixon. Meet at
8:30 a.m. in the parking lot in front of the Food Lion store on
Route 51 just off I-81 in Inwood and carpool from there to the preserve.
The hike into the preserve will begin about 10:00 a.m. and last
about two hours. Free and open to the public but space is limited
