Be a Litter Quitter!

Why should you care about the trash you throw out? Here's some food for thought:

How long it takes to decompose

Styrofoam Container..........................Over 1 million years

Plastic Jug..........................1 million years

Aluminum can..........................200-500 years

Plastic 6-pack rings..........................450 years

Disposable Diaper..........................550 years

Tinned Can..........................90 years

Leather Shoe..........................45 years

Plastic Shopping bags..........................10-20 years

Cigarette Butts..........................10-12 years **

Wool Sock..........................1 year

Paper Bag..........................1 month

Banana Peel..........................3-4 weeks

***Cigarette Butts are the most common form of litter. Some people believe that cigarette filters are made of biodegradable cotton that will quickly disappear if tossed out rather than thrown away safely. In fact, 97% of filters are made of plastic cellulose acetate which harms and kills animal life until it finally decomposes after 10 to 12 years. ***

Ideas For Being a Litter Quitter

  • Recycle everything possible safely.

  • Throw out the rest safely in a trash can with the lid secured shut.

  • Prepare all recycling and trash to prevent harming plants, waterways and animal life.

  • Keep a litterbag in your car..

  • Buy reusable bags for groceries and other shopping.

  • When you visit a park or beach, take out what you took in - or- throw it away safely in trash or recycle containers.

  • Remove flyers from your front door or car windshield before they are blown away and become litter.

  • Help keep your community clean - Join others in clean-up campaigns such as removing litter from roadsides, parks and waterways.

Etc, etc, etc. Add your ideas and become a dedicated Litter Quitter!
